這是一首反對種族歧視的歌曲，歌中提到了羅斯福總統，偉大的黑人領袖馬丁.路德.金。
其中一段歌詞極為經典，「告訴我什麼降臨到了我的生活，我有一個妻子與兩個孩子正深深愛著我，但我已成了警察野蠻行為的受害者，我早厭倦了一直被當作仇恨的犧牲品，你們口口聲聲說為了上帝的利益，卻使我失去了自尊，但我在期待上帝實現他的諾言，還我自由！」 「告訴我什麼才是我的權利，是不是因為我們太渺小你們就忽視我，你們已承諾要恢復我的自由，我早已厭倦於被當作可恥的人了，但他們把我仍進了監獄並強加給我一個很壞的罪名，我簡直不敢相信這就是我所出生的地方，你們知道我十分痛恨說這句話，但政府不願看到這一切，如果羅斯福還在的話，他不會讓這種事發生的，在生活中有些事是他們不想看到的，但如果馬丁.路德.金還活著的話，他不會就讓這樣下去的。」
「所有我要說的是，他們不會真正關心我們。」 從這寫話中，體會得到邁克爾對於無端誹謗的無奈與嚴厲的控訴，暗示著那件他認是被誹謗的兒童性騷擾案，發泄了他的無比的仇恨。
他自己在評論這首歌時說：「我的這首歌引發了很大的爭議，但我要想做的只是，想撫慰那寫被壓迫，被歧視的可憐的人們，以及種族主義，種族隔離制度與觀念的受害者，我要幫助他們，使他們重新振作起來，與惡勢力斗爭，找回生活的自信，並且我也要站在他們中間一起戰斗。」
這首歌有兩個版本，MTV也有兩個版本，一個是我們所看到的在巴西貧民區萬人打鼓的場面，另一版本的MTV描繪的是在監獄里的場景，由於內容充斥很多暴力鏡頭，一般我們是看不到的，（我們現在能看到一些有刪減無字幕版的 或者是後期我們自己加的字幕版的了）在美國也是禁播的，但這也許更能表現主題思想了。

MV有兩個版本

監獄版的透露出大量包含暴力、種族矛盾等社會陰暗面
卻才能表達出受欺壓者的處境與現實面
該單曲的MV發行的時候曾被禁播，因為因為畫面有敏感的政治鏡頭，黑人被虐待的鏡頭和警察打人的鏡頭。還有戰爭的畫面。而且歌詞有明顯的關於民族和宗教的內容(敏感的猶太的話題)。還有反對暴力。還有一些憤怒的臟話，牽涉了太多的政治因素，所以被禁播，後來流傳的是MJ在巴西拍的。當時不僅MV禁播，單曲也差點被封掉。

Black Or White 講述的是種族問題，但卻不是用嚴肅而沉悶的方式來表現。這首歌曲擁有輕快的節奏，至少在歌曲本身當中，Michael沒有對那些不平等表露出極端的憤慨——雖然他仍然提到了這些事實，他完全將那些置之度外，而聲稱"I said if you're think of my baby / It doesn't matter if you're black or white"（我說如果你想成為我的愛人/你是黑是白都沒有關系）。Michael還首次在他的歌曲里嘗試請來說唱歌手來為歌曲增色，L. T.
